DINNER: Australia need 75
India finish with 36!
Shami has been forced to retire hurt adding to India’s woes. Their innings ends at 36/9, leaving Australia a target of just 90 to go 1-0 up in the series. What an extraordinary morning we’ve had!
Shami hit on the arm!
This is turning out to be a real horror story for India. Shami is now hit flush on the bowling arm and he’s in a lot of trouble. He’s got his hand bandaged but seems very uncomfortable in holding the bat. The physio is out having a long look!
Hazlewood produces another of those nagging length deliveries nipping away and has Vihari too caught behind. He has five now. 5-4 in 4.2 overs!
Hazlewood strikes twice, again!
Saha and Ashwin depart off consecutive deliveries. India are 26/8 and in real danger of being bowled out for their lowest Test score ever which is 42! Saha chips a simple catch to mid wicket while Ashwin, like others before, pokes at a full one and nicks behind. Both Hazlewood and Cummins have 4 apiece now!
WICKET: What’s happening!
Virat Kohli departs now and it’s Cummins who gets his fourth now. Kohli goes for a big drive against a slightly full delivery but gets it on the outside half to gully. Cameron Green fumbles but manages to hang onto the chance as confirmed by the third umpire. India 19/6 and spiralling down rapidly!
Another WICKET: Rahane departs
Hazlewood strikes for the second time in his opening over! He bowls a lot fuller and gets some away movement as well. Forces Rahane to play and then nick behind for a simple catch. Australia have roared back into this game with India on 15/5!
WICKET: Hazlewood gets into the act
He strikes with his first ball of the day, getting a tentative Mayank Agarwal to prod forward and nick behind to a perfect length delivery. India in all sorts of trouble at 15/4!
WICKET: Pujara falls for a duck
It’s a big wicket for Australia. India are effectively 68 for 3 at the moment and Cummins has superb figures of 3-8 at the moment. He gets Pujara playing too far inside the line to a good length delivery and gets him nicking behind. Perfect start to the day for Australia. They are right back in this game now.
WICKET: Cummins gets Bumrah
The nightwatchman does not last long. Cummins gets him chipping a simple return catch back to help Australia start on the right note.
Hello and welcome to our coverage of the third day. This Test has been fascinating already.
With 15 wickets on the second day, it has also moved forward rapidly. Can India build well on the lead they have already? Or will Australia manage to turn the advantage with the ball.
Speaking of turning the advantage, here’s Bharat Sundaresan on how R Ashwin meticulously planned and worked for that Steve Smith dismissal. It’s a fascinating tale that brings out yet again how good international cricketers are in executing their thoughts, and what it takes to do them. And here’s what Ashwin himself said when he reflected on the day. Stay tuned as we bring you more of this and a lot else from the third day’s play.
